Le Caravage (1571-1610), de son vrai nom Michelangelo Merisi est un peintre qui va bouleverser l'art pictural au XVIIème siècle, et va l'influencer jusqu'au XIXème siècle avec le " Caravagisme ". L'artiste met en œuvre une approche saisissante avec un naturalisme radical, une observation physique étroite avec une œuvre dramatique (voir théâtrale) et l'utilisation dominante du clair-obscur. Malgré une vie tumultueuse, son talent est reconnu par ses tiers et de nombreuses commandes lui sont faites, principalement de scènes religieuses comme " La Conversion de saint Paul ".
